An Agent backstabbing a Brute.
A backstab is a special, situational attack for the Agent. When an Agent uses a melee weapon (such as the Knife) from behind, it will perform a backstab, damaging the enemy from 41 damage up to 200% of their max health. Backstabbed targets also play unique animations upon death, which were contributed by freakyfish7.
Mechanics[]

Angles for backstabs.
Backstabs are available to be scored when facing an enemy's back at an angle of 90˚ away from their facing angle or greater. If the angle is greater than 135˚ away or the Agent is above their target, a full backstab is scored and the enemy will take 200% of their max health as damage. Upon backstabbing an enemy, they will release a loud cry, and, 50% percent of the time, they will play a unique death animation depending on their class.
If a backstab's angle is greater than or equal to 90˚, but below 135˚, a sidestab will be performed. Sidestabs deal from 99% of the enemy's max HP to 41 damage depending on the angle. The knife will also be raised at various heights to represent how much damage will be dealt upon stabbing.
The damage dealt scales linearly from 41 damage at 90˚ away from the target's view angle, to 99% of their max health 134.99˚ away from their view angle.
Tips[]
- Out-maneuvering your opponents in order to get a backstab is known as a "Trickstab". Common trickstabs include:
- Matador: When being pursued, start running one way, then quickly move in the other. The enemy will look where they think you're going to be, exposing their back to where you actually are.
- Stairstab: Start running up stairs or a slope, then quickly jump backwards before your enemy can react. If done correctly, you will end up on top or behind the enemy, where you can then stab them.
- The "sidestab" range is from the enemy's side, to the back of their shoulder.
- Upon being backstabbed, enemies make a loud cry, alerting nearby enemies that an Agent has backstabbed someone nearby. There's three ways to avoid getting caught after a backstab.
- Cloak and run away.
- Trickstab or shoot any witnesses.
- Use the buffs you got from backstabbing (if it's not the stock Knife) to help you escape.
- Backstab with the Your Eternal Reward, which instantly disguises you as the target you stabbed, along with preventing the enemy from making a sound upon death.
- Before stabbing an enemy Marksman, take a second to ensure they aren't using the Razorback. If they are, three quick Revolver shots will be enough to kill them.
- Before stabbing an enemy Mechanic, make sure you are outside their Sentry's line of fire. Otherwise, you might kill the Mechanic but die to their Sentry, making you unable to sap it.
- If there's an enemy Doctor healing one of their teammates, backstab his teammate first.
- Overhealed enemies are an huge problem to your team, so do them a favor and get rid of the bigger threat first.
- Naturally, Doctors will pull out their melee to fight Agents that just killed their teammate. You can easily trickstab (or even easier, use your Revolver) the Doctor to finish the job.

Trivia[]
- There is a game called TC2 Backstab Angle Visualizer made by SpacemanIgloo to visualize the backstab hitbox, however it uses old damage values and is therefore outdated.
