The Brute is a powerful class who uses his Minigun to suppress the battlefield with his storm of bullets. Despite this, he can still easily lose a fight with the wrong tactics. This includes your actions against skilled enemies who know your limits. Using this guide you may or may not learn a thing or two about dealing with other classes.
Brute's Contributions[]
Contribution | Tactics |
Health | You boast a high health pool of 300, the highest in the game, allowing you to tank quite a bit of damage compared to other classes; however, this doesn't mean you're always a hard target to take down. Remember the locations of health packs and know when to retreat to them.
Some items, such as the ROBAR or Brash Burger, provide healing and can keep you topped in a battle without the need of retreating. The Biker's Blitz can also be used for a 15% damage resistance when revved up, increasing your health to 352. |
Speed | You have the slowest speed in the game, which can make it hard to traverse maps and can make you an effortless target. Take note of any shortcuts you can take and know when to retreat back to your team, because your slow speed will punish you for overextending.
Some weapons, like the Speed Coil, will make you faster which can partially negate this downside. |
Power | Your main weapon is the Minigun, a powerful high firerate hitscan weapon capable of doing 36 damage per shot. Your other weapons include the Shotgun and Fists, both of which can be used when you don't have time to rev-up your minigun or when you are out of ammo.
While all of these weapons are powerful at close range, they get weak at longer distances, making Brute a particularly close-range class. Switch weapons from time to time to make full use of the Brute's potential. |
Role | Your role can vary between objectives but it mainly focuses on being a powerful frontline class for both offense and defense. Other roles include flanking behind enemy lines, a much tedious but potentially more powerful playstyle; a support role if you have any of the food items equipped; and even capturing/defending points, as your high health pool makes you a great candidate for this role.
The Brute has a number of roles which are good for different situations, so in a match, read the scenario and adapt to a viable playstyle. |

Summary: The Lever Shotgun is a powerful tool in a Flanker's arsenal, but your miniguns are an easy to way make Flankers lose mobility and health. One strategy that can help bring you the upper hand against unaware Flankers is to hide in less visible areas and to mow down any Flankers attempting to rush past you. Just be aware of your barrel spin noise, or use the Tomislav. Just like Agents, you should check your back for Flankers frequently, as their speed allows them to easily flank and attack you unexpectedly. Flankers will need to get close to you to make their shots count. So take advantage of this habit. Also, Flankers love to pick on Doctors. If there's one pocketing you, make sure you protect them. You can see your Doctor's HP at the bottom of your screen. Useful weapons:

Summary: The Rocket Launcher simply doesn't do enough damage when in direct combat against a Brute. It takes up a whole clip to even get close to killing a Brute, but even by then the Brute would've won the fight. But don't laugh it off if you see a Trooper. The rockets may not be so powerful, but if your aim is bad compared to the Trooper's, you can still die. The Trooper becomes a real threat if he's using the Direct Hit. However, because of your huge health pool, Trolldiers (Troopers who only kill with the Market Gardener) will avoid challenging you, because its 135 crit damage is merely a scratch to the Brute. There's also the fact that you can interrupt their rocket jumping with your Minigun. When facing off against fearless Troopers, keep your eyes to the sky. From above, Troopers can still carpet bomb your location and finish you off with a Shotgun blast. Stay away from vertical ranges and suppress the Trooper with your bullets. Useful weapons:

Summary: The Flamethrower can be considered a much weaker Minigun in terms of range and damage, however the flames can easily kill you or at least soften you up for more enemy attacks. Remember that the Minigun is still effective at midrange, so gun down the Arsonist before he gets close, be careful of the Arsonist's combo variants, the Interceptor, Flare Gun and Thousand Degree Axe can kill you much quicker than an enemy Brute. If there's a Doctor pocketing you, smarter Arsonists will take down the Doctor, die to you, and depend on their teammates to finish you off. Make sure to fend off the Arsonist and immediately give the Doctor a lunchbox item to put out his afterburn. Useful weapons:

Summary: Unlike the Rocket Launcher, the Grenade Launcher always deals heavy damage on direct impacts and stickybombs explode all at once. The Annihilator is much more agile than you are and he can quickly bomb you if you are not careful. Your minigun can quickly disable stickybombs. Either stay afar to avoid his projectiles or stay in close range so he also takes self-damage, crouching while shooting at the Annihilator is a very good strategy as most Annihilator will aim for the upper body. Try to be close to mid-range with the Annihilator so that your gun will kill the Annihilator before he kills you. You can survive a few tricks from the Annihilator, such as a single stickytrap or close-quarters combat (especially against Anniknights, where you can easily mow them down with your primary weapon before they even land a hit). However, look out if the Annihilator pulls out an Ultimatum. A direct hit will douse you in the lemonade debuff, which means more grenades exploding will make you receive crit damage. Useful weapons:

Summary: A Brute vs Brute situation can end very quickly and change a game's pace. The various primary weapons you both possess can also factor in the victory. The Tomislav and Maxine can speed up, while the Biker's Blitz slows down for damage. If you hear a Brute pre spin up, hide behind a doorway or corner and start firing while inching back to them, you will be able to land the hits first and win the fight. The Brute's mirror-matchup all depends on the presence of a Doctor. If the enemy Brute is being pocketed by a Doctor, it's a bright idea to high-tail it out of there. Unless you also have some type of advantage, try to kill the Doctor before engaging the an enemy Brute, and make sure you're at full and are fully revved up first. No matter what, do not use your melee against another Brute. You'll still get mowed down by their Minigun, unless they agree to throw hands too. Useful weapons:

Summary: The Mechanic's buildings are well off, but they aren't exactly foolproof. A Sentry may shoot slightly slower than Brute's Minigun, but it's still deadly none-the-less. Brutes have more health than a Sentry, so you could still destroy it before it kills you, especially if there's a Doctor nearby. Just be careful if the Sentry is at Level 3. There's the added danger of rockets, and that's something that can push towards a Brute's death. On the other hand, the Mechanic himself is a weakling. Having only 125 HP he's easy to mow down with your Minigun. His Shotgun and Pistol will only do so much, but something like the Wrangler can double a Sentry's fire rate which can match your minigun and possibly kill you. If played right, the Mechanic himself can still pose as a threat. Look out if his Primary is the Widowmaker. It does a ton of damage up close, and about 3-4 good shots from full HP will send you back to the spawn room. If a Mechanic is really causing you trouble, taking down him and his nest separately gives you more room to fight. Try to find a position where you are far enough from the sentry to not detect you while still being able to deal consistent damage to the sentry. Useful weapons:

Summary: The Doctor's weak arsenal only makes him fare decently against weak enemies, so in a direct fight, you can win easily. But once the Doctor can find a patient, most of the classes that you counter can now counter you. Troopers, Arsonists and Annihilators are common heal targets, with overheal they can survive a direct fight against you. An enemy Brute overhealed is very hard to kill, even if you start firing first. In the end, try to defeat enemy Doctors before they find a teammate to use as a meat shield. Because of your slower speed, it will be hard to escape any overhealed enemies. If the Doctor has overhealed their teammate, hide. Trust your teammates to distract the pair as you find a better position to gun down the Doctor from behind. Useful weapons:

Summary: Rarely does any Marksman appear within close range, most likely they will be across the map sniping your head. Your slow speed makes you a prime target for any Marksman, so avoid running through any open areas for too long. You may not have a lot of mobility to dodge bullets, but something as simple as a single step backward can make a Marksman's shot miss. You also can literally see the Marksman's sightline, so it will act as a warning sign to dodge a well placed bullet. None of your weapons can deal really good damage against a Marksman who's far away, so don't fight back to save resources. Leave it to your Flanker, Marksman, or Agent to take the enemy Marksman out. You must watch out if the Marksman has the Model IV. Its bullets are strong enough to penetrate through players, so if a Doctor is directly behind you, it's lights out for the both of you. Encourage your Doctor to keep moving around you to keep a Marksman from getting a double kill. Useful weapons:

Summary: The Agent is Brute's worst matchup. While other classes can eventually kill you, the Agent is the only class who can immediately kill you without any warning signs. That is... if you weren't paying attention. A smart Agent will often only stab you when you are distracted, check your back whenever you can and spray a room to check for them. If the Agent is more willing to use their Revolver, take an opposite stance and gun them down while keeping your head low. To fight back against the Agent, keep an eye on the killfeed for any knife or revolver icons for the Agent's presence. Shoot teammates to make sure they're not disguised Agents. Lastly, don't fight Agents with your melee, because they can trickstab. You must also be careful when eating lunchbox items, as this is where you're most vulnerable. You cannot move until you finish the eating animation (and the Brute eats very loudly, which can attract enemies), so keep your back against a wall to make sure you an Agent doesn't rudely interrupt your snack break with a backstab. (Even with your back against the wall, Agents can still try to stab you from extreme angles. Beware.) A knife you need to look out for is the Conniver's Kunai. If you're backstabbed at full health, the Agent will have nearly 180 HP, making it harder for your teammates to avenge your death. Useful weapons:
