[ Someone forgot about their appointment with the Doctor.
―Doctor

The Medigun is the default secondary weapon for the Doctor. It is a futuristic, chainsaw-like, team-colored healing device resembling an energy cannon with spade grip on top of the main body as the energy is placed inside it. The nozzle has Doctor's symbol placed onto the portion.

Despite technically being a weapon, the Medigun is intended to heal injured teammates, even buffing their health above the standard limit (an effect known as Overheal). The weapon's healing rate is variable, ranging from 24 health per second (if the patient was damaged in the last 10 seconds) to 72 health per second (if the patient hasn't been damaged for 15 seconds). Newly-spawned teammates will always be healed at 72 health per second.

Healing teammates also contributes to the Doctor's unique SuperCharge meter, which gradually fills at a rate of 2.5% per second (including on non-full Overheal patients); the rate is halved when healing patients over 142.5% health, or if the patient is healed by another healing beam, such as other Mediguns, Dispensers, or the Payload cart.

When the SuperCharge meter is full, pressing Alt-Fire encases the Doctor and his patient in team-colored shells that grant them full damage immunity for 8 seconds, though they have no protection against movement effects, such as slowdown or knockback.

While SuperCharged, the Doctor and his patient cannot capture a control point, pick up the intelligence, or push the Payload cart, though they can block the other team from capturing these objectives. If the Doctor is carrying the Intelligence and tries to activate his SuperCharge, nothing will happen, and the SuperCharge meter will stay at 100%.

If the Doctor is healing a teammate with a faster move speed, the Doctor's own movement speed will be increased to match them, allowing the Doctor to keep up with Flankers or any teammate with a speed boost. However, unlike the Rejuvenator, the Doctor cannot copy blast jumps or shield charges. Any kills the patient gets is counted as an assist for the Doctor, and they can turn around freely while healing a patient so long as primary fire is held down.

Medigun has a Halloween-themed reskin called the Malpractitioner.

Tips

  • When healing a target, the Medigun's beam will stay locked on to the patient regardless of the direction the Doctor is facing. You can use this to your advantage by checking behind yourself for enemies, alerting your patient for help should an opponent approach you.
    • This connection can also pass through thin walls. allowing you to heal patients regardless of being able to see them. You can use this to avoid being in the sightlines of Marksmen.
  • Healing a teammate with the Medigun will allow you to see how much damage they deal to enemies. In fact, if they get a kill, you will get some of the credit as it will be listed as an assist on your score.
    • This also applies to Doctor's other secondary weapons.
    • Assists contribute to your killstreak, so help multiple teammates out to build it.
  • The Medigun is the only weapon where its SuperCharge stops all enemy attacks from dealing damage (full immunity).
    • This means that this weapon is the best one to use when clearing out an entire enemy team, or the enemy Mechanic's buildings without dying.
    • Doctor's other mediguns charge faster, but only give a small damage resistance or damage boost when SuperCharge is used. To 100% ensure your survival, the stock Medigun is your pick.
  • If ambushed, it is better to activate your SuperCharge to escape than to die with a full, unused SuperCharge meter.
    • This is best known in the quote "Pop it, don't drop it."
  • Be aware that the Medigun's invulerability will not protect you from environmental hazards, such as cliffs, saws, or trains. Enemy Arsonists may attempt to airblast you into these hazards, so remember their locations and avoid activating your SuperCharge near them.

Bugs

Trivia

  • The weapon's previous backpack description was "An effective healing tool with the ability of short term invincibility."
  • A Community-quality version of the Medigun was given to MidnightKrystal, Campyfire and emilio121212 for contributing unusual effects for the game.
  • The design of the 2017 model is based on a combination of a Team Fortress 2 custom weapon called, The Kralle and Team Fortress 2's Vaccinator.
    • There were multiple viewmodel animations for the previous medigun viewmodel where it used to spin when the user is healing a injured teammate during pre-rehaul. They were removed after the Rehaul phase begun, the reason was that the animation reduced FPS significantly.[1]
  • If you turn off viewmodels in the settings and heal teammates with your Medigun, the healing beam will appear from your head instead of the Medigun at the bottom of your screen.
    • This only applies to your view, your teammates will still see the beam coming from the Medigun.
