The Short Circuit is a secondary weapon for the Mechanic. It is a small, futuristic handheld gun.
The Short Circuit does not have its own ammunition and instead draws directly from the user's metal reserve. The weapon's primary fire consumes 3 metal and unleashes a short-ranged burst that zaps enemies every 0.1 seconds, dealing 10 damage.
Alt-Fire releases an energy ball with a 0.5 second attack interval, that travels rapidly and destroys all enemy projectiles (except for projectiles that cannot be deflected, such as the Personal Death Ray, and the Huntsman) it collides with. The energy ball launched via Alt-Fire consumes 65 metal and deals 15 damage, it can also hit enemies multiple times.
While the Short Circuit is deployed, the user cannot haul buildings.
Enemies killed by the Short Circuit suffer a distinctive death by vaporization, turning them completely black, making them hover mid-air whilst being surrounded by blue electrical particles, and then disappearing into ashes while a loud sound emulating a vaporization plays.

Tips[]
- The main gimmick of the Short Circuit is that it's actually two weapons in one. You can either fire tiny lasers, or a huge Energy Ball.
- Note that the Energy Ball itself is a projectile; fire on where the enemy will go, not where the enemy is.
- Use the Short Circuit defensively.
- The primary attack, which is a stream of tiny lasers, is a bit weak. Do mind that shooting these drains your ammo three times faster. Only use it to finish off enemies that are heavily injured from your Primary weapon, but now are out of its range.
- The alt-fire attack, the Energy Ball, can help you escape Troopers and Annihilators that are chasing after you. Running away and occasionally shooting the Energy Ball behind you will delete their explosives.
- The Energy Ball also does 15 damage to any enemies near it, the same damage as a Pistol. So consider it a travelling Mini-Sentry.
- Before fighting with the Short Circuit, make sure you've built all of your buildings first.
- Remember the locations of nearby ammo boxes, and how often they're grabbed by teammates. That way, you can easily refill your ammo and metal.
- Unlike in Team Fortress 2, the Energy Ball is very small. It's about the size of a character's torso, so your aim will have to be perfect in order to deal damage or delete incoming projectiles.
- Do not use the Widowmaker with this weapon. They both depend on your metal supply, so you'll find yourself with no metal and will have to use your Wrench to fight in melee combat.
- However, you can prepare for this scenario by equipping a Wrench that does good damage against players. The stock Wrench is a perfect example.
- The weapon is great to clear chokepoints filled with projectiles and sticky traps. As the Energy Ball travels towards the enemy team, it will clear any form of projectiles in its path.
- This weapon is great on Payload offense, the infinite ammo received from Payload Carts allows the Mechanic to spam Alt-Fire.
